Nellie McClung was born in 1873 in the village of Fairview on the shores of Lake Winnipeg. The Fairview Fair became an established community meeting place for the entire district, especially after the local post office was established in 1882. She served as Fairview's first postmistress from 1883 until 1908, when the post office was still located in her house. She also helped plan Fairview's town hall, school, and market building. While helping build Fairview into a thriving community, McClung managed to earn a bachelor's degree at Wesleyan University in Connecticut and studied law at Osgoode Hall Law School in Toronto.

It was at Wesleyan where she met her future husband, William Lyon Mackenzie King. The two were married in 1897 and had four children together: William Lyon Mackenzie King (1904-72), Louis-Philippe King (1899-1917), Marguerite (1904-81) and Deborah (1908-92). Her husband became prime minister of Canada in 1926 after serving as minister for justice for nine years.
